Want To Get A Dog? Why You Should Choose A Shelter Dog

Posted on

If you are planning to get a new dog for you and your family, you have many options. You could purchase one from a breeder, but you should consider a shelter dog first. There are many reasons why this is beneficial, three of which are listed below.

Saving Lives

You likely have a few dog shelters in your area. If you visit one, they may be completely full. This means they are not able to take in new dogs if they come to their shelter. Approximately 6.5 million animals are taken to shelters in a year but only about 3 million are adopted by someone. You never know if any dogs are euthanized at shelters as well.

You are not only saving the dog you choose but also when your dog comes home with you there is space for another dog to come to the shelter. This means you are also saving their lives if they become adopted.

May Love You More

Most dogs will love their human, but you may find shelter dogs show even more love. They will be grateful that you chose them to come home with you. If they have been at the shelter for a long time, they will be even more grateful. Some dogs may have been abused or come from bad conditions.

When your dog arrives home with you, they will likely be nervous as all dogs generally are. Once they become relaxed the dog may be happier and show you a lot of love. They enjoy the extra attention they get from being in a family home, as well as the love and food they need.

Have a Variety to Choose

When you visit a shelter, you will find there are a variety of dogs available. You can find a small dog, a medium-sized dog, or a large dog. You can find a young puppy to take home with you. There may be a senior dog at a shelter who needs a loving and comfortable home to spend the rest of their life in.

Many shelters have purebred dogs even though they will not have papers. You can get a DNA test if you prefer if you take a dog home with you. There are a lot of breeds at the shelter as well.

Visit a few shelters in your area to learn much more about how they work and to see the dogs they have available.
