3 Ways To Control Cat Diarrhea

Posted on

Cat diarrhea can be a serious problem for pet parents and the cat alike. Discovering that your kitty is having this problem in the litter box - or worse yet, outside of it - is a mess than pet parents don't want to have to deal with, and in the meantime, it can be dangerous for your kitty. If your cat is experiencing diarrhea, here's what you can do to put an end to it.

1. Pumpkin

Pumpkin is a type of fiber that can be useful in helping your cat to not have diarrhea. It absorbs excess water in the digestive tract, which allows your kitty to produce a more solid stool.

Pumpkin is tolerated quite well by most cats. You can simply stir in a spoonful with their wet food to encourage them to eat it. However, you must make sure that you're using pure pumpkin, not pumpkin pie mix, which contains spices, sugar, and other fillers. Canned or cooked pumpkin work equally well, so pick whichever is easiest for you.

2. Rice

Rice is often put in cat food to begin with, so it's completely harmless to cats. If you've ever heard of the so-called BRAT diet, you know that rice is a good choice for humans when they're having stomach issues. The same is true of kitties!

Rice helps to absorb moisture like pumpkin, and it also tends to have a mildly constipating effect, which can be useful if your kitty is having diarrhea. Mix in a small amount of plain, cooked white rice to your cat's wet food. If your cat doesn't tolerate it well, you can try buying wet food that already contains rice as an ingredient.

3. See A Vet

If neither of these provides the results you're looking for after a couple of days, it's time to see the vet. Like with people, cats can become dehydrated and very ill if they have diarrhea for too long. As a result, it's important to get to a vet to be treated for dehydration. In addition, it's possible that a more serious illness is behind your cat's diarrhea, like tapeworms or a food allergy.

If your cat is having diarrhea, you don't need to panic just yet. Use pumpkin and rice to help control your cat's diarrhea. If you see improvement, slowly discontinue both additives and see if your kitty stays regular. If they go back to having diarrhea, see a vet office like Ark Veterinary Hospital.
